Aluminum foil is easy to fold, crumple and shape by hand. That makes a small offcut useful for an art experiment before you reach for a fresh roll. These five projects use clean, dry foil at room temperature; they require no heat, cleaning products or electrical equipment.
1. Make a raised-pattern card
Arrange lengths of string on a piece of scrap card and secure them with craft glue. When dry, lay foil over the pattern and gently press around the string with a fingertip. Fold the foil edges around the back of the card. Try a simple leaf or a few curved lines first; pressing too hard can tear the sheet.
2. Shape a miniature sculpture
Crumple a small piece into a loose ball, then pinch and fold it into a leaf, animal or abstract form. Build a broad base so it can stand. Start with one piece rather than repeatedly adding layers, and keep any sharp folds tucked inward.
3. Add contrast to a collage
Combine small foil shapes with paper or card. Leave some pieces smooth and lightly crumple others, then compare how the surfaces catch the light. A few accents may be enough. Keep the finished collage away from candles and hot lamps.
4. Explore a texture print
Lightly crumple foil, unfold it and place it flat on a washable work surface. Apply a small amount of craft paint with a sponge, then press paper onto it. Follow the paint label and treat the foil as craft material afterward; do not return painted or glued foil to food use.
5. Make a tabletop photo reflector
Wrap foil around a piece of cardboard and stand it beside a small object in diffuse daylight. Adjust the angle to compare shadows. This is a simple photography experiment, not a light fitting: keep it away from bulbs, sockets and powered equipment, and do not direct reflected sunlight at anyone's eyes.
Finish with a tidy workspace
Handle torn edges carefully and collect small scraps. Keep usable clean offcuts for another project. For disposal, follow the local collector's instructions for foil and craft materials; paint or glue changes what you are asking the collector to accept.
